How To Never Have A Clog In Your Kitchen Sink Again

Kitchen sink clogs can be an extreme nuisance, especially if you're in the middle of trying to cook. They get even worse when your dishwasher can't drain because you have a clog somewhere in your drainage system. If you're sick and tired of dealing with kitchen sink drains, here are three steps you can institute to ensure that your clogs drop to nearly zero.

Avoid Food Debris

Food debris is one of the leading causes of drain clogs in kitchens. It's easy to look at little bits of food going down the drain as not a big deal, but in reality, this can lead to major clogs down the road for you.

Instead of letting bits of food go down the drain, scrape away all food debris before putting dishes and cups into the sink. In addition, you can install a drain blocker to ensure that no solid particles get down the drain. Just make sure to clean it regularly, as once the food caught in it starts to break down, it can end up fitting between the holes and sliding down the sink.

Flush the Drain

Another common issue with kitchen sink drains is that they're not getting enough water going down them. This might surprise you, but it's more common than you'd think.

As more and more homes get water-saving faucets, this becomes more of an issue. Water-saving faucets use air to propel the water outward while using less water than traditional faucets. The problem with this for your drain is that your drain is rarely filled with water, and instead, only a gradual trickle goes down the drain.

To combat this, regularly flush your drains with hot water. Simply put a plug in place, fill the sink as far as you can with extremely hot water, and then let it drain all at once. This will help to flush away small bits of debris in the drain and push them out into the sewer line where they belong.

Regular Drain Cleaning

Lastly, you should get the help of a plumber to reduce how many drain clogs that you have.

Drain cleaning is the service you should sign up for. Drain cleaning gets rid of not only bits of food, hair, and other debris in the sink but also tackles food oil. This is a major issue that's hard to avoid even if you take steps to avoid having solid food go into the sink. When oil develops on the internal walls of your pipes, it can catch any debris that goes down the drain and start to create a clog. By having a plumber come out and perform a drain cleaning on a regular basis, you can eliminate this issue.
